Re: How much tax or duty do I pay on a Canadian silver dolla

It depends on whether you live in Canada or the US. If, living in the US from a US dealer, you pay nothing .. likewise if you live in Canada from a US dealer, there is normally no tax from the dealer's standpoint. However, if you live in Canada and buy from a US dealer, then Revenue Canada will get ...

Re: coin values in book question

You were wise to make your first purchase a book rather than a coin. I would suggest that the first 3 purchases be books rather than coins, especially if you are looking at MS-65 stuff. The next thing you need to do, if high-grade coins are to be your specialty, is to learn how to grade and how each...

Re: How to sort a very large coin collection?

I would suggest that you buy a Canadian coin guide first, either Charlton's Vol 1 or the Whitman Haxby guide or the Wiley/Haxby guide.... all published annually. Then go over the denomination sections in question so you have a general idea as to which coins sell at a good premium over the rest. Just...

Re: how to store coins

Since the largest coins that I collect are large cents, I prefer the cardboard/mylar 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 stapler type holders rather than 2X2's. There is still enough room to write what you want (small) and you get 30 coins to the page album rather than 20. You can sell on Ebay (or kijiji), but it takes d...

Re: Please offer grading opinion for 1871 PEI one cent attac

Most of what I see as green is on the Obverse at the end of the hair ribbon and the "I" in Victoria. Even if it's not green (in hand), it appears to be environmental damage of some sort.

Re: Please offer grading opinion for 1871 PEI one cent attac

XF-45 "corroded or with environmental damage" in the remarks, depending upon the TPG. If any of that green is the hard kind, then there will be pits or corrosion underneath. From a "wear" state, there is almost none and most on the Reverse .. a nice XF coin.

Re: Which years are more likely to have premium errors?

There are a great many errors that are worth a very healthy premium, but they are not things that you will pick up from pocket change or collection boxes. Brokages, "caps", major off-centers and major clips are all worth a pretty penny, but die cracks, chips, small cuds or extra metal, wha...

Re: Which years are more likely to have premium errors?

First, I suggest that you put this post (thread start) on a couple other coin sites to maximize the exposure that it gets. I certainly would try "canadiancoppercoins" m as well as the appropriate subforum in Coin Community Forum m . The collector named "vertigris" on this site sh...

Re: augusta plantilla

From the resolution and clarity of the photos, I don't think that anyone can give you any grading help on your eclectic collection. The Canadian ones look to be quite nice, but it's hard to tell. I suggest that you pick up the latest Charlton or Haxby annual coin guide .. both have grading parameter...

Re: 1984 Jacques Cartier Dollar

PMD means it didn't come out of the mint like that. It has dings or was tampered with. Without seeing it in hand, it's worth a dollar (from the blurry pic only)

It looks like PMD (post-mint damage). There looks to be some more under and to the right of the 4 as well.

Looking for an owl coin

I hand-carve canoe paddles with a spoke shave (different sizes) and then insert a coin (usually a silver dollar from the birth year). However, I have a request from someone to have an owl put in the handle ... I carve the paddles incognito and give them to people as gifts (each takes about 40 hours ...
