Re: 1895 thick 5

To me, all of the digits in the bottom photo look "fatter". For many years with the Vicky large cents, the handpunched in the last digit, in this case with just the 189 on the naked die. It saved the mint from having to make a new master and/or subpunches. Nice answer rdg65. If you've dived heavy in...

Re: cleaning coins

DON'T clean your coins, unless you have no choice. Go to the archives here and see how many say NO NO NO for cleaning any coin! If you are metal detecting, a gentle rinse in warm distilled water may help, but you can still damage just with the handling.

Re: 1859

Yep, it looks like j7K. However, I have a hard time believing Haxby's rarity scale. He has 6-7 that say rarity 10, and I find that unfathomnable. I'll look through mine and I think that I have 2 10's that would be in addition to his, I guess. Although I sent 6-700 59's to "Phil" for the Haxby site, ...

Well, let's just say that heaton had some tough years trying to make good dies correctly and then trying to repair them.

Re: 1899 1 cent Study on repunch 9

Yes, we put 3 repunched 9's in the 2011 Charlton, but there were more that we didn't have enough more pages alloted us. There are differences in the length & strength of the underpunch below and right of the hook/tail and where it starts and ends. Also a difference on where the vertical start/end is...

Re: Package Error - Charles III First Strike Uncirculated Set

By going to the mint, you've done all you can do. Until they get back, then there's not much anyone here can do/suggest, except QC, which the Mint lacks.

Re: 1893 Triple Punch 1 Cent

Most were well known from an old coin site called CCRS (Canadian Coin ? Society) that had nearly 100 dedicated Canadian coin collectors and researchers. Information was pased freely back and forth and some research projects, especially on Vicky large cent varieties, took years. We used to all meet a...

Re: 1888 - Middle 8 with bead punch

Yes, as stated in Turner's book ,the 2nd 8 is always repunched, some with not a lot of offset. Yours, with a partial bead-punch inside the 2nd 8 is not normal and is fairly scarce. But you can have 1, 2, or all 3 8's repunched. It's a neat year to find varieties, especially with nice offsets.

Re: 1893 Triple Punch 1 Cent

We included that one, I think, on p336 of the 65th Charlton (2011), with the Vicky varieties in the back. I would have to see the rest of the markers on your coin to be sure, since I think the one in the book was mine in the photo. There were 4-5 doubled, tripled, or quad punched 9's for 1893, and w...
