What is a "Fish Scale" coin

Topic says it all. I keep seeing "Fish Scale" coins on ebay and other sites. They cover a variety of nationalities, denominations and dates.

Is it some sort of variety or error?

I live in Canada near the US border and my employer had an office in the US that I occasionally had to drive to. I often made stops at US dealers on my way to or from the US office. Great web site! Looks great (although i wish you designed for a 1024 wide screen instead of 800), feels great, and the content is top notch. I look forward to seeing it grow and prosper.
