Re: Future of Canadian coin collection?
I've definitely seen some younger people at some of the big shows and Expos though, definitely they're in the minority. When I was a kid everyone seemed to be collecting something or other... coins, stamps, various odds and ends....

Future of Canadian coin collection?
I'm curious to know what people out there thing the future of this hobby is? The consensus among most of the dealers I know is that the pandemic has increased interest. On the other hand, I've read various reports about overall interest - the number of new people coming into the hobby, the number wh...

But the coin, not the holder - as long as you look at what's actually inside the plastic then you'll generally be okay - at least as regards fraudulently slabbed coins. The actual forgeries are a bigger problem.

That's beautiful! Though I'm also not much of an expert when it comes to copper and bronze. Furthermore, while this site is full of useful information the chat culture - at least on the English side - is a little slow. I suggest you repost here: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID...

Re: Coin Collection, Do I have anything good here?
The devil's in the details. Most of the heavily circulated silver and nickel from 1935 - 1960 is not that a valuable but there are some exceptionally rare and variable coins in there nevertheless. There are things to watch out for like the 1936 dot varieties as one example but what you need is a sol...

Outstanding work! I'm a fan of these little wee coins - mostly focused on Newfoundland at the moment however. I hope you're able to fill some of the remaining gaps some time. It's inevitable that the last coin you want to get will take the longest...

I've found this forum to be fairly disappointing - the site is great for data on various Canadian coins but not so much for conversation. I suggest you try here:

Re: Estate collection/accumulation- seeking advice
You might talk to Jared Stapleton at Metro Coin and Banknote [http://www.metrocbc.com]. He's a straight shooter and could advise about opportunities to sell something like this. Though agreed that it's an uphill battle. People who collect this sort of thing seem to thrill to getting it new from the ...

At the moment they're probably worth exactly what they say on the reverse. I would salt these away in a sealed box buried in Algonquin Park with instructions for your great great great great grandchildren as to how to find them and get into the box.

my white whale coin....do you have one?
The 1870 Newfoundland 5c was reportedly minted in two forms: one with obverse #1 and one with obverse #2. The two obverse portraits can be easily distinguished by the presence or absence of little dots on either side of "Newfoundland" on the obverse. Total mintage was 40,000 so they were pretty rare...

Re: New Coin Collector ideas
I think it's important to keep some perspective on it. Maybe it's not what it used to be (people used to collect matchbooks once upon a time too) but dying strikes me as a little hyperbolic. There will always be some people out there who want to have these things. Important to do it for the right re...
