I see no error either; just a toonie that's led a tough life

Yes, post mint damage, but who knows what specifically happened.

Re: I was told this was a rare type of doubling. I just want to confirm. 1935 silver dollar

Yes, it is MD (machine or mechanical doubling). Worth a very small premium, if any, since the offset is very minor. Hundreds of thousands of UNC 1935's are out there, since it was the first year of issue and many went into drawers or boxes/albums. You won't get rich off it, but it's a nice example o...

Re: 1941 silver 50 cent coin.

Well, maybe your thread coin was stored in a PVC-containing album or holder before you got it. Every place on your coin that has any high spots, which would have touched whatever coating it was, shows the contamination. I'd do some acetone soaking if I were you. The coin is just scrap silver as is.

Re: 1941 silver 50 cent coin.

OK, I was wrong on the cloudy image. It's caused by PCV contamination from the holder. Someone had the coin in a holder or album that was some form of PVC rather than mylar. Regardless, it's PMD and not something at the mint.

Re: Real values? Ebay a huge bargain?

Well, I think that there are some auction bidders who have taken the phrase "I couldn't believe my eyes!" way too literally. Even 25-30 years ago, you would never have seen this happen. I think much of this affliction is due to the fact that TPG's have managed to propagandize new and middling collec...

Re: 1941 silver 50 cent coin.

If you take the coin out of the holder, that faint impression will disappear. The coin has shifted to the right in the holder and the hazy image to the left of the monarch is on the inside of the mylar.

Re: Real values? Ebay a huge bargain?

I still don't understand your concern about the auction. Do you feel that the auction house is misrepresenting the coins or that people are just way overbidding? To me, the bids are too high for a common coin. I still can't see a decent photo .. only the arm's lenth one where you can't see the writi...

Re: Real values? Ebay a huge bargain?

If people are dense enough to bid $24 US for a scrap silver coin worth half the current bid, then they deserve to be taken advantage of. I have no idea how you can come even arms-length close to seeing what grade the coin is. With each face dollar containing .6 troy oz of silver, a 50 cent piece wou...

From the foto, I can't even see what kind of coin it is. What is your concern?

Re: 2002,2006 matte toon

I really don't see what you are mentioning. The pics are too blurry. The coins are struck with the core already intact so a clash that is seen would be elsewhere on the coin as well, even maybe the lettering. But sometimes clashes are only evident on a small portion of a coin, but I see nothing.

Now that the thread has gone to '59's, it's a little off topic. You will need to go to Jim Haxby's and Phil's site every day: https://www.vickycents.com/

Re: 1895 vicky errors x 3 ?

It's the '58's that you want to check for the vines and stems. EVERY 1859 has vine breaks at 7 and 13 (but they each grew as more dies were made. Then the vine break at 2 started small about 1/2 to 2/3 of thru the year and grew all the time. The stems are another matter, but lots of repunching thru ...

Jack Griffin was the premier "variety" researcher/author for Canadian Large Cents for decades, starting about 1960. He and Hans Zoell published formal and informal studies/pamphlets/articles on varieties and errors on large cents for the benefit of the numismatic community. Jack presented a paper to...
