Re: 1881H obv 1a Large Cent
Yes, have to keep the mintage numbers in perspective. One thing though when you stated: Because the neck truncation direction/width of an Obv 2, when struck over an Obv 1 or 1a partially finished working die, ir obliterates what was under the Obv 2 strike of the hub on the working die . The Obv2/Obv...

Re: 1881H obv 1a Large Cent
That at least confirms what I have surmised, in that the 1881H Obv 1 is the least common of the three main types. I am a bit surprised that there are relatively so many 1a/1s. My small sample size only has one definite 1a/1 which clearly shows the 'dimple' and one probable (dimple is very faint). Th...

Re: 1881H obv 1a Large Cent
Yep. Have come to conclusion, after assessing some of my 1881s, that the Obv 1a is more common than the Obv 1. I did discover one very nice 1a/1 with some distinctive markers - die cracks, a repunched 'N' in REGINA (not at like the one pictured on this site #3810), some subtle doubling of a few lege...

PCGS 1890H
It astounds me that someone could accept a coin so poorly graded - let alone keep such a coin in its holder. Anything to stroke ones ego I guess. This coin is VF25 tops but personally I would go VF20. RD

1881H obv 1a Large Cent
Is the 1881H obv 1a large cent rare? The reason I ask is there is no pricing info about this variety on this site, which I thought strange as this variety is certainly not unknown. RD

Re: Errors and Varieties
Thanks for that great explanation Bill. I will need to get into the books to refresh my knowledge on the entire process that was used in the 19th century. It seems that the making of the hub was time consuming and unless the ultimate product (minted coin) was totally unacceptable they would go with ...

Re: Errors and Varieties
I recently started organizing some of my collection. For my Victorian large cents I found myself being quite obsessed with die crack variations. In fact, I discovered some that were quite 'epic' in that they traversed a good portion of the coin. I think I find these interesting because my father was...

Re: Substantial Coin and Bank Note Collection For Sale
A few points to pass on. 1. As time passes, the lists of Victorian coins and banknotes I have available for sale will become less accurate in terms of availability. 2. For a few coins, I realized they were assessed either a half grade too high or too low i.e. after further analysis, what I believed ...

Re: Another NGC Grading Masterpiece
I think VF30 is a very reasonable assessment. It really is not that difficult to at least assess almost any coin within half a grade of the 'true' grade. Why does NGC have such a hard time?
