Wow! That thing is worse than a Rorschach test, where you have ink blots and you are supposed to guess what it looks like. This is a regular US penny that someone either took tools to or was caught in some kind of machinery. It's post-mint damage to the nth degree.

The "P" stands for "plated", meaning that the coin is plated, rather than homogeneous metal. It began in 1999.

Is the missing digit due to wear? Is the remainder of the coin very easy to read? Is there damage where the missing digit is? If everything else on the coin is no problem, it's probably due to plugged or filled die and MIGHT be worth a very small increase in value.

It's not very often that a strike-thru will go into/thru the design. That would require something soft or flexible enough the go down into the die's design recess and be hard/stiff enough to cause the metal to not flow during the strike. It looks to me like a scratch from the machinery after the die...
