Re: Jerusalem of Gold 25th Anniversary
I received this reply from a friend fluent in Hebrew. Seems none of us hawkeyes could read the English lettering at the bottom, but now knowing what it says it appears obvious. ISRAEL'S 25th ANNIVERSARY. Reading from the bottom up, on both sides [ of the stylized 25 ]. The left, in English, the righ...

Re: Wear areas on Elizabeth II silver dollars question
should fit between EF-40 and AU-50.
.. but certified - bagged and tagged. It's not like you paid MS price for an uncertified EF. As the saying goes, don't look a gift horse in the mouth I suppose.

Re: Wear areas on Elizabeth II silver dollars question
If I take a loonie out of a mint roll and carry it for a year in my pocket with the rest of my day-to-day change, at the end of the year is it circulated or uncirculated? It's hard to tell but what I see on your dollar is a lot of bag marks and high area rubbing abrasion (scratching). In photographs...

.. which are supposedly graded by the previous owners as being "uncirculated" It could just be a case of someone biasedly grading their own coins ... but not knowing if and when the previous owner(s) took these "uncirculated" dollars out of "circulation", here's what I...

Re: Jerusalem of Gold 25th Anniversary
Rookie, I doubt the Holy Land Mint would know anything of it but you could try. Here's a very similar silver medallion produced by the same private firm as yours I would think. The obverse(?) is the same. ebay item (scroll down) BTW, who exactly, besides our federal government, is melting down gold ...

Or .... you could sell it on ebay to non-dealers that expect, and are willing to go higher than spot.

Re: Jerusalem of Gold 25th Anniversary
25th anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem occured in 1992. I'm sure this is what's being commemorated here. There seems to be several medallions issued over the years to mark the reunification. The Holy Land Mint put out this one in 1992: israelmint.com --also see it here and here As well, ...

Re: Which side of the coin wears faster?
Grading the obverse is done so for consistenty and simplicity. To have a standard by which to grade any given effigy on any given denomination. Of course different effigys wear at different rates. IE Edward vs George V dimes. Compare the reverses, then compare the obverses. Due to the design of the ...

Re: 2012 toonie
Since 2006, the bottom of the obverse has the mint mark. I assume 2012 was no different in this regard, HMS Shannon and the Security-bear notwithstanding. From the mint... Composition: Outer ring of 99% nickel and inner core of 92% copper, 6% aluminum and 2% nickel* Weight (g): 7.3 Diameter (mm): 28...

Yup, that's right. I'm old school—often just use the letters. Numbers are redundant.

Re: 1952,1954 Canadian nickles
I've never been sure how to grade these steel nickels. On the rev, the beaver's rump, tail and head are pretty well the first areas to wear through the chrome to the nickel then to bare steel. On the obverse George's cheek, eyebrow, jaw and hair wear in that order; and the queen, her shoulder and ba...

Re: Which desirable years for Canadian silver dollars
Just collect them all and you'll be happy But seriously, there's not that many years in the entire set and relative to our other coinage, mintage of the silver dollar is very low for most of them before 1958. You've obviously seen the numbers and realized that trends follow accordingly. Key dates ar...

John,
"Fair shape" can mean a lot of things. It's probably best that you give a grade range that you're interested in collecting. IE: VG to EF; better than Fine; etc.

Re: Two U.S. dollar coins
The '22 Peace dollar is at best an EF-40 but difficult to be certain using these small-ish photos. See a guide here: How to Accurately Grade Peace Silver Dollars (1921 – 1935) The Ike doesn't look to even make it as an AU-55. Not that it makes any difference since it's probably worth only $1 USD eit...
