1941 1963 1966 50 Cent Pieces

Post by doylecoins » Sat Oct 27, 2012 10:45 pm

I have a few older 50 cent pieces that I have questions about.

(Yes, I have a separate 50 cent piece that is not a part of my 1963 proof set for anybody that has read my other post in grading) These coins have weird discolourations on them. The 1966 one is in great shape and the silver colour is really noticeable. Its beautiful. However, the 1963 one has brass-like discolourations on the front and the reverse. The 1941 has the same brass-like discolourations, but not as bad as the 1963. Will these brass-like discolourations have an impact on the price of the coin? I would post pictures but it takes way too much effort...

Maybe it's just toning. Without pictures, it's hard to be sure of what happen to your coins.

Here is the 1963 one which has the most significant discolourations. I know for sure it isnt dirt or something along those lines.

Here is another picture of an uncirculated 50 cent piece that I got from my father's collection. It has the same discolouration as you can see. I dont really know if its considered uncirculated anymore as the plastic in that discoloured spot is gone. The plastic is still on, its just a hole in that spot. You can probably see the triangle shape where the plastic is gone.

Looks like dirt. Can't say if it's uncirclated or not, but it seems circulated coins.

I tried to rub the 1963 coin but nothing came off. Its blended into the coin. And it cannot be dirt, those 2 coins have been sitting in a box since my grandma and father obtained them. The one in cardboard is uncirculated, and the 1963 is circulated.

I have these and noticed on Ebay that a 1950 50 cent coin was being auctioned for a thousand dollars..I don't understand the complete value of these at those prices..my father passed away and left me cans of coins, silver dollars, and American silver pieces. I've spent the last couple of weeks going through them and still haven't catalogue all of them..here are some of them.

First hit "post reply" link. Then you will see the message post "block" page. Just above the block, you will see the "add an image" link. Hit the link and follow the directions. All you have to do is find the photo on your computer and add it with that link. There IS a size restriction on how large (pixel-wise) the image can be. If it's too large, you can never send it.
