Which side of the coin wears faster?

Post by Hot Brass » Sat Mar 30, 2013 5:37 am

Hi: Generally speaking, which side of the coins, (lets say a 1935 Canadian silver dollar) would wear faster, the heads or the tails.Would there be more emphasis placed on the high spots on the heads side when minting the coin originally?. Also, when judging a coin for grading, are both sides checked equally for different varieties and wear or just one side? Thanks,Hot Brass

Both sides of a coin are looked at as well as the edge for grading conditions. As for wear,,, both sides should wear about the same,,,no

I am probably wrong, but the two books I just bought only show the 'heads' side of the coin when they show you what to look for as far as high spots or typical wear areas? Maybe other books show the tails area for what to look for,,,,not sure!? Hot Brass

Grading the obverse is done so for consistenty and simplicity. To have a standard by which to grade any given effigy on any given denomination. Of course different effigys wear at different rates. IE Edward vs George V dimes. Compare the reverses, then compare the obverses. Due to the design of the relief, King Eddie gets a lot smoother a lot quicker. In other words, you can't compare apples and oranges and call them all coconuts.

I've always treated grading as a gauge to measure wear. Dings and nicks being something that the market sets prices against accordingly. This generally applies to circulated coins; MS grading (counting hairline scratches in the incuse areas) is a horse of a different colour.
