Coin Mystery?

Post by Rells11 » Mon Aug 24, 2015 12:21 pm

I was going through some of my grandfathers unsorted coins and came across this coin. It appears to be a 1870-1901 Victoria 10 cent. The coin measures 18 mm diameter and has a reeded edge. Is this a trial piece? Any information would be appreicated.

Looks like the coin was counterstamp and used to become a necklace.

They are called "love tokens" and sometimes were engraved on both sides. They were very popular from around 1870 to WWI. Maybe "Eva" was your grandmother's name.

Thanks for the reply's this has been very helpful and insightful. I am not familiar with that name but have asked the family's history buff (Great Aunt) and awaiting a reply. Regardless this find has been most interesting and educating.

As I am very new to the coin collecting, used to do it when I was a kid with my grandfather but never got into identifying and grading a whole lot so those skills are rusty. I have a large volume to go through so I hope this is a place for "stupid" questions.

thanks for your time. :D

Just look up "love token" on Ebay and you will see lots of them They were given by husbands to wives on special occasions, or man to woman couple.
