Proof Dimes (1996-2000) Made of Nickel??

Post by Tom Bones » Tue Nov 21, 2017 3:28 pm

Hi all! New user here, and I am having a problem looking for PROOF coins that Charlton Press has listed as real; though I don't think so. I'm hoping Charlton made a mistake or two in the book (2016 version) and I can actually cross off a few coins from my 'Want-List'.

Primarily, Charlton listed Canadian Proof dimes in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, & 2000 that are made of nickel. I have acquired silver proof dimes from each of those years, but can't find any nickel proofs for sale anywhere in the past two years. Help....help!

Also, Charlton also lists a Canadian 1996 Half-Dollar Proof made of nickel. Does this exist?

As I mentioned, I'm hoping the listings were errors, and I would have six less proof coins to complete my sets. Any help is appreciated!!

Tom-
I think what you are referring to are the dimes that are
in the proof sets that are issued by the RCM every year.
None of the denominations in these sets are silver.

Almost just the opposite: aside from the penny and the dollar loonie, all of the other coins in proof sets were made of silver since 1996. Coins were made of sterling silver (92.5%) until 2012, when the composition was changed to "fine silver" (99.99%). "Nickel" sets were released in 2012 and 2014 (not sure about post 2014's) along with their silver partner sets.

As I stated earlier, my information comes from 'Volume Two' of the 2016 Charlton catalogue. What puzzles me is the information from the 2016 'Volume One' book, which lists the 'nickel' dime proofs. This is the info I think (and hope) is in error.

Sorry Terry-
Bad choice of words on my part.
I realise the Proof sets are silver as I have all the sets.
I was refering to the sets in the cellopaks but I see
that they are now being referred to as BU.
If your looking for a supplier of the proof dimes,
check Calgary Coins. They have them listed from
1981-2000, the same years as Charlton.
They are a little more expensive than the other finishes though.

Sorry, I meant Tom, not Terry.
Also disregard my statement about Calgary Coins.
Having a bad day and shouldn't be replying to posts.
