Availability of 50 Cent and Nickel Dollars at Banks in Canada

I am going to be traveling to Canada this autumn, and wondering what is the likelihood I would be able to obtain 50 cent and nickel dollar coins at banks? Would I be able to obtain any rolls of 50 cent pieces? I know they do not regularly circulate, but down here in the USA I can often obtain rolls of 50 cent pieces and occasionally the large base metal dollar coins.

Your chances will be between nil and none. Banks very seldom get 50 cent coins (the last time I asked at my bank, the teller said she hasn't seen one in years) as they haven't been made for circulation since 2002.
As far as the nickel dollars go, most tellers don't even know what they are and if the bank does get them, they have to be turned in to the Alloy Recovery Program.

Thank you for the information. In the USA, 50 pieces have not been minted for circulation since 2001 and sometimes coins minted after 2001 do appear in rolls from the banks. A big difference is we do not have an alloy recovery program, so we are able to acquire those coins at banks.

Have you tried a coin store in the US. My local coin shop has plenty of Canadian coins and they sell at a .8 of face and then an extra .8 for the exchange rate.

That’s because our coins down here in the states are worth recovering.
:D
If you go to the website coinflation With the composition of .999 nickel makes them worth recycling.

Typically, a $12.50 roll of Canadian 50 cent coins sells for 24.95 by the RCM...so if you get a Canadian roll of 50 cent coins for face value anywhere, I think you got a deal....

Are you just interested in mint rolled Nickel dollars and 50 cent coins?

Would you possibly be interested in loose or self rolled coins?

PM me with your email so we can connect as I may be able to help you.

When exactly and where in Canada will you travel? I am in Alberta?

Happy travelling.

I do also have some original mint rolls I would be willing to sell. To bad you didn't post your inquiry last year. I had between 200 - 250 roll that I sold off.
