In 1997 the cent changed from copper to copper plated zinc CPZ (non magnetic). They are still produced today The P cents are minted from a copper plated steel CPS planchet which the Mint started using in 1999 as a new process and therefore is magnetic. The P stands for the plated steel ones . Both types get minted and we have both kinds in circulation. With some years for which only one type was minted.

So the P mark on the cent is for magnetic,no mark is non magnetic. When a handling mistake is made (volontary or not ) at the Mint we may find a P exemple which is non magnetic and a no P which will be.

I am not aware that in 2002 there are P which are not magnetic and a 2002 which are.

Hope this help :Lecture:

I have only come across one so far in this group of coins . I will have it checked out to make sure its authentic . Seems to be a bit smaller in diameter and thinner.
