1888 Double 888 Large Cent

Post by ddmgj » Sat Jul 02, 2016 10:11 am

I have an 1888 Double 888 Large Cent which is a MS Red example identical to the image listed in CoinsandCanada. I would like to get it certified but it doesn't look like PCGS or NGC certify this variety although they do seem to recognize the doubled middle 8 only variety.
Does anyone have any experience with certifying this variety? A picture of my coin is attached.
Thanks.

CCCS might certify it, but there are probably 20 different repunched combinations and and off-center directions for the 1888. I wouldn't waste the money on the certification. You know what you have and it's just slightly hard to find and not scarce and certainly not rare. To find an MS example is very out of the ordinary.

I thought it was a unique 888 double strike as shown in the Coinsandcanada listing. The price value for the 1888 in MS-62 is $85.50 while the MS-62 double "888" variety is listed at $420. I didn't realize there are numerous double 888 variations.
