Looks like a split planchet, that can be seen on the reverse of the coin as well.
Be nice to have a sharper photo.

That new photo makes it easier.
Definitely a split planchet.
Don't think I have ever seen a split that large.
Nice find.

Interesting conversation. I am very curious, now that there is an answer to this coin (split planchet) what value can be placed on such an error. Over the years I have collected several error coins of every denomination and I save them with or without any definition of the error. There are so many possible errors, how does someone place a value on one error vs. the other error.
My question is simple: If your reading this I am sure you will agree that coin collecting is a very interesting hobby. Is collecting "ERROR COINS" a separate hobby? Are there collectors out there that specialize in error coins only?

Curious

There are many collectors who specialize in and only collect
error coins as well as those that collect both error and regular coins.
It is hard to value an error coin as there is not a "book price" as
nearly every error is unique. Most of the minor error coins do not
warrant much of a premium whereas spectacular errors can bring
big bucks. Basically it is what a collector is willing to pay.

There are coin forums and organizations dedicated to error coins.

The value of any coin is completely dependant on the one who wants to buy it.

This coin has a cool factor but it's not rare or uncommon. The big money in error coins is in the ones that hardly get "out" of the mint.

$50 - $100 would be my best guess for a coin like this
