Canadian large cent fullT

Post by coinman1941_4 » Thu Jun 01, 2017 7:39 pm

I scoped this one up last winter while i was in Florida from a seller on ebay for a regular cent. Its is the hard one to find with the full T in victoria.

I take it that you are talking about the 1876H large cent. There were 3 Obv dies that had the T in Victoria recut/repunched, making them now with a full serif.... all other 1876's have just a single serif on the foot of the T. Each of the 3 dies (you need to collect all 3) has a different "marker". One has the last A in Gratia heavily repunched, with huge offset. One has the second A in CanAda heavily repunched, but not as much offset as the one with Gratia. The last type of the 3 full-serif T's has neither of the A's repunched. Supposedly, there were about an equal number of them struck, but I find the repunched A in Gratia the scarcest and the "no repunch" the easiest to find.

We didn't put each of the 3 in the 2011 Charlton variety section (4 of us co-wrote it for Charlton), because the 3 types hadn't been discovered/gleaned out yet... we knew about the one with "no A's repunched. We only put the CanAda one in due to space limitations. Your coin was a nice find. B

Yours looks like the one that has neither A repunched. Look for the other two in your travels. BTW, the 8's on the 1876 were all slightly doubled (from the hub).

I have attached what the last "A" in Gratis looks like for the scarcest one. I've also attached what the "I" in Dei should look like on your coin .. the one with no doubling.
