1884 - Obverse #2

Hello there! I am new on here and somewhat new to collecting Canadian large cents. I have not had much luck in finding another resource for errors and varieties on the Canadian coins. Would someone be able to direct me to another reputable resource whether it be a book or online?

Also, I recently purchased an 1884 - Obverse #2 and had some questions regarding the doubling on the coin. I wasn't sure if the doubling found in the crown and bead ring were a part of what made this a #2 OR if the doubling was a separate error from the chin being the deciding factor of it being a #2. The picture on this site shows the doubling in the crown and hair but only states "double chin."

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! :D

No, an Obv 2 is identified by the crown tip impinging on the bead and the neck truncation where it comes to a point. If it is between the beads above and to the left of the C in Canada, it's a 2. An Obv 2 also has a dip or crease in the neck/throat. An Obv 1 will be fully rounded with no "dimple" there and the crown tip will not hit the bead.. A little bit of machine/mechanical doubling is very common.

Hi Bill, I know about the Obv #2 with the bead/neck/truncation, thank you for clarifying on the doubling. So what would constitute a MAJOR DDO on this coin? Has one been found? Would you be able to help me in finding another reference source for errors and varieties? Thanks again! :)

Troubador,
Thank you! :)

Yes, there are 3-4 real doublings for 1884. You just have to look for them. Most are manual repunches of letters. I know of no hub doubling for the year. BTW, I co-wrote the Vicky Large Cent Variety section for the 2011 Charlton (the one with the Vicky varieties in the back. That is the last large project that deals with the majority of the large cents. You can pick up a copy of Rob Turner's "Dies and Diadems" .. a great book on all the Canadian large cent mintages and it includes the 1884. You can also try to get a copy of Jack Griffin's 1992 work on "die varieties of the large cents of British North America. DO NOT use Charlton's Monograph 1, which was supposedly a reprint of Jack's work. Monograph 1 is riff with errors with the photos not matching the descriptions. For 1884, look for the N in Canada and the N & E in Cent for possible repunches. For 1884, look for the Obv 1
