What a great visual aid, troubadour! Even though they are an error, rather than a variety, I've always been drawn to MD Vicky cents with nice offsets. Hub-doublings come from a working die that had 1 or 2 of the pressings needed to fully impress the design into the working die a little off kilter, so that every coin struck from that working die will show the same offsets/anomalies.

Machine or mechanical doubling takes place in the nanosecond just after the working die strikes the planchet. As the die is just coming off or rising from the planchet, it will move slightly in any direction because one of the keepers/screws has come loose. If not noticed and retightened, the die can become looser and looser, resulting in more and more offset in the coin striking and affecting more and more of the design. MD will affect only as many coins as it took to notice the malady and to retighten the keepers. This may be from a few hundred coins to more than a few thousand .. or even the whole time of that striking session if quality control doesn't take notice. Most MD's are infinitely scarcer than a variety would be because it is in effect a much shorter time than the life of an actual die would be.
