thin 1 cent. Error?

Post by united4ever » Wed Jul 12, 2023 9:04 am

Hello I joined because got hundreds of coins from my father.
This 1 cent seems unusual as very thin compared to regular photo3. Wondering if its a misstrike and if yes any kind

It does look like an odd coin. It would be a planchet issue. It is not a silver colour, so it would not be accidentally done on a dime planchet. It is likely that the metal stripping used to punch the planchet had some thin spots and this coin was punched from there. Alternatively, it could have been struck on an incorrect planchet for another currency - but you would have to look at other penny like coins the mint produces to determine if the weight matches something else.

One of the things you should note is that if you do have any coins of interest, it would be best not to be touching them with your bare hands - cotton, vinyl, or a latex type glove would be good.

The thin rims and thin letters seem to indicate the coin has been acid etched.
This would account for the thinness of the cent.
