The 1949 50¢ with the hoof over 9 has evidence of doubling on the 4. Is this common?

Can you show a photo of the whole date?
There are something like 46 varieties of the 1949 50c.

"pg in rh" is the 50 cent guru and has done extensive research on the 50 cent for years. He lives North of T.O., don't think that he is a member of this site. He wrote the 50 cent variety section for Charlton, but he had to pare down the 100's of Geo/Liz silver pieces. I'll contact him with a link to this site and maybe he can get you the info.

On the 194x series of the 50 cents the date digits were entered manually into each die (except for 1940). For 1949 there were 40 reverse dies and so 40 different date configurations. On this particular die, the doubling on top of the 4 was done (repunched) on one of the punch/hammer strikes (up to 4 to fully impart the date digit) also you will see the triple punched 9 (9/9/9). Later after usage the die developed a die chip from the hoof to the 9 to develop the on the 9 popular ‘Hoof over 9’ variety. So this is a real find: a 4/4, a 9/9/9 and the die chip.

Hi Rick,
I knew this coin looked familiar (the squashed tail of the 9) and we had talked about it. Should have mentioned the 4/4 at that time, although it is a little hard to see.

Hi pginrh

I had posted a picture of that and other 194x 50 cent coins that I have. I was preoccupied with the hoof over 9 that I didn't notice the shadow on the 4. You commented on the other coins before for which I appreciate your knowledge. Thanks for the information.
