1973 PEI dollar differing thickness

Post by Mulberry » Wed Dec 20, 2017 9:52 pm

I have two 1973 commemorative PEI dollars, but they are different thicknesses. I haven't measured with a "good" caliper, but I think the photos speak for themselves. Has anyone seen this before? Is this an error or were there two types minted? The thinner coin is not worn down at all just evenly rounded at the edge.

What you have is called a wire rim or wire edge that is
making the coin look thicker.
(It's caused when metal get caught between the collar and the planchet
when being struck)
If you check the thickness of the fields on the two coins,
I'm sure you will find they are the same.

Made a typo.
Meant to say when metal gets caught between the collar and the DIES.

Thanks coinguy. So does this mean it's a variety? Any difference in price for one coin over the other? Are these rims common?

Wouldn't be a variety.
Might be classed as a minor error.
It is fairly common especially on Silver Dollars.
Doesn't really add much value. I have several
that I paid the same price as for as ones with no wire edge.
Might be worth keeping though as it is different.
