$20 Prefix AIW with serif??

Post by Enyaw » Thu Jun 29, 2023 4:40 pm

Today I got $1000 of uncirculated bird notes ($5's, $20's and $50's) from my bank and when I checked this website for serial numbers a set of 8 notes with the prefix AIW with serif? came up. I am new to banknote collecting and was looking for more information on "with serif" and if my notes have it.
I was quite shocked to see AU55 to UNC60 values around $170 each if these are the correct type of note!!

Oops, I found my answer on the website.
However, do all the I's with serifs denote a replacement? I have an EIM0770476 with serif that isn't flagged on the website.

That is a common note with 130 million printed in that series, this is why it is not listed.
Also a serif “I” is not a replacement note, they have an “X” as the third letter.

I thought this series still had the X but was confused when I saw this on this website.

According to this site there were about 3.6 Million notes with the AIW with the tall or serif I.
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/note201573.html

If you look on the auction information, 3 GUNC65 bills sold for about $170. About half what they are listed for on CaC.

My Charlton has this note at the end of the pricing panel for 1991 $20 (BC-58)*:
Note 6
$20 insert replacements notes come in blocks of 18,000 or multiples of 18,000, starting with the Knight-Dodge signature.

However on the pricing table, there is Knight-Thiessen AWE (Below 160,000); AWH (below 100,000) & AWI (between 1.00M to 1.10M) all designated as an insert replacements) with a capital A or BC-58cA. So there were three Knight-Thiessen insert replacement ranges discovered before the Knight-Dodge inserts.

Knight-Dodge inserts begin with EVZ & continue with 21 other prefixes (check your Charlton for details of the serial # ranges).

Insert replacements were discovered by brick searches who then reported their findings to one person (an "insert adjudicator"). After a few other searchers verified/confirmed other stray prefixes (notes inserted in other bricks with different prefixes), the adjudicator narrowed down the range of insert notes based on the 18,000 rule. Hope that clarifies things
