George VI 1 cent errors

Post by verdigris » Fri Jan 11, 2013 12:14 am

Great website and forum you have here. I'm very glad I found it and have already learned a number of things from the experience. Namely, error types and their causes, and especially, how to recognize them. In this regard, your large collection of photos has been invaluable. Thanks for your help.

Just to explain; I've been collecting coins since the Charlton catalogue was hardback. Now I suppose that dates me, but nevertheless, with the coming demonitization of the penny I was spurred to take stock of what was in jars and drawers around the house. Of course, that's how I found this fine website. Nothing too special to report from that little exercise other than a BU 1964 and a 1978 "double 78" with the Queen's chin clashed above the date. However, as you no doubt know how one thing leads to another, before long I was rifling through my stash of copper "extras" in my collection. Thinking I might get lucky and find something unique in the lot, I checked 4 tubes containing all dates from 1938 through 1952 -- here's what I've found so far...

    1941
die cracks in CANADA (from either side, not joined)

    1943
die clash under leaf, die clash and chip under ear

    1943
    die clash under leaf

    1943
die clash and accumulations under leaf

    1946
die clash and accumulations under leaf

    1948
pronounced die crack from rim through O of GEORGIVS

    1948
die clash under leaf, large compound die chip under ear and fill in ear

    1949
    die clash under ear

    1949
    A to dentical (EF) :D

    1950
    die clash under leaf

    1950
mortar set in date and CANADA

    1951
die clashes under leaf and under ear

    1951
die clashes and chips under leaf and ear

    1951
    (8) die clashed either rev or obv

    1952
    die shifted obverse inscrip.

    1952
die clash and chip under leaf

    1952
    (3) die clash and chip under leaf, die clash under ear

    1952
    (2) die clash and chip under leaf, large die chip left leaf LHS, die clash under ear

    1952
die clash and chip under leaf, large die chip right leaf RHS, die clash under ear

    1952
    (9) die clashed either rev or obv

I'm a little suprised at how many errors I'm pulling out of less than 200 pennies almost all of which I collected from my paper route in the early 70s. Was quality control at the mint really that bad in the years after the war? And what the heck happened in 1952? I started with twenty-six '52s and I'm left with only nine without die clash or worse?! Any comments would be sincerely appreciated, and in the meantime I'll take some photos of the more interesting flaws and report any further blunders as I wrap up my sorting.

Cheers

Welcome to CoinsAndCanada!
Looks like you found an interesting group of coins with errors!

Quality control, production techniques and dies weren't good as today. I'll watch with interest your following posts and pictures!

The two images above are a bit deceptive. To the naked eye this coin is toned very black with bright relief lines as you can tell somewhat in this image below comparing both these 52s.

Not sure how to describe this one so please correct me if I go off the reservation.

reverse: multiple clash lines of obverse ear under leaf, large die chip (with accumulation) on leaf RHS
obverse: (not shown) typical die clash under ear

BTW, these pics were all taken using a hand-held Sony Cybershot through a printer's loupe while balancing a 100w paper-shaded lamp with my knee. I'll try and improve on the setup.

Cheers

A variation of what we've seen so far...
reverse: die clash and chip under leaf + die chip on last A in CANADA
obverse: die clashed at two spots under ear (apparently, if left to do so, these two lines on the die will eventually join together thus creating a dome, which leads to chipping at the bottom of the ear)

I took photos of yet another 1952 with clashes both sides and chip under the leaf, but after realizing there wasn't a whole lot of difference between it and #4, decided it would be redundant to post them and just move on to another year.

I'm not fully certain that this crack reaches the rim on both edges - I think it meets the dentical on the left hand side then runs along it to the edge

reverse: die crack through CANADA; possible retained broken die
