1897 large cent
I have an 1897 large cent that is smaller diameter than the others. I can't find any indications of tampering. could it be wrong planchet? my scales is "kaput', so no weight. It was compared, visually with another cent, and is obviously smaller.
thanks for looking,
Dick

Re: 2002 magnetic penny
The process I use for determining which are mangetic, (if i don't use the magnet), is to check for the "P". that tells me the core is steel. I believe that will work for any date.

Re: Crazy 1881H Legend...
I thought at first, that the pictures by mkb were either machine doubling, or hub doubling. After looking at them several times, and blowing up the images, i find that they are indeed, HUB-doubling, but It also appears to be two different fonts used! The second font appears to be a smaller size. The...

Re: Your collector type
Mine has been a varied lot. I started with US cents, went to Mexico, and collected types, the first time, the second time ai went with date. Then Back to the US cent, and then a bit of everything. A few years later, (a lot of years later, actually), I went back to the US all types, and quickly went ...

Re: 1 cent 2009 - Magnetic or not
I would like to be as enthusiastic as you, but where would I find a "whole batch" like that", down here in the Mexican border area of the SW US? I know there are both magnetic, and non-magnetic, and FWIW, the 2010 are the same way, that is coming out in both stules. I haven't even see...

Re: What retains value in Inflationary Periods
This reminds me of the time I was living in Mexico, ans warched the inflation go above 200%, and the exchange rate go from 12-1/2:1, (US, to over 3000:1 The house I rented went lower each year in US, but higher in Mexican currency. Money was "shipped"out of the country as fast as it could ...

You saay you found it while metal detecting? Then the chances are that it was buried, or partially buried, and had been for some time, judging from the photos. T e obv is so bad, that it would be hard to tell , and the rev does not show all that much "value. I would not worry about diong any mo...

Larry, that must have been used as a pendant, at some time. The spot at the top is definitely a heat discoloration, and the metal looks like silver-solder.

I agree. The terminology is as shown, it is like we use in the US, and the "up-up" orientation, we refer to as "Medal orientation.
