It's a damaged coin.
The 6 was not placed there at the mint.
It's called a counterstamp.
Some counterstamped coins are collectible, most are not.
If it is not a recognized counterstamp your coin is worth melt value only.

Dipping in mercury will not do the trick. The mercury just slides off. Did this many times at school in the 50's. You put a drop of mercury on the face of the coin and rub it in using a fair amount of pressure. Then after school you'd go to the dentist for an amalgam filling. Surprisingly most of my...

Yes , it's a former colored coin.

It's been damaged and the copper underlayer is showing through.
On the face even that layer has been removed and the bare steel is showing.
