What causes rainbowing toning in coins? And does it give it value beyond 5 cents. A friend found this for me.

I have a 1941 s nickel I need help with I am new to this and would appreciate all of your input. I believe the top of the s looks like a large s and the bottom looks like a small s. Sorry I couldn't take a better picture.
