I don't know the correct answer and don't know if anyone does. If it is a die crack then we should be able to find coins which show some progression of the crack. I would also think it would go right out to the rim, most cracks seem to start at the rim and go in. Perhaps it was a piece of metal stru...

Could it be from over-zealous polishing of dies? I have 1949 five cent coins which are similar in that the lines follow the writing or image and almost look like doubling where the polishing is very close to the details.

Here's a favorite of mine. I believe it is a die clash with dies rotated and then the die was placed back in proper position. This is a prooflike coin, ICCS certified.
