Re: What do these mean ?!!

They represent the grade or condition of the coin. Coins used to just have a verbal grade .. poor, fair, good, very good, fine, very fine, extremely fine, almost uncirculated and uncirculated. Sometimes they would add 'brilliant uncirculated". 20 or more years ago, the grading companies decided...

Re: 1882 one cent Canadian coin

Can you post a photo or scan of it? Are you sure that there is no H under the date? Maybe it's worn off. I have been collecting Victoria Large Cent varieties for 30 years and never seen one.

Re: 1867-1967 Canada CENTENNIAL 25 Cents - LYNX Silver Coin

The 1965 and 1966 are .800 silver. 1967 has both .500 and .800 silver. Both weigh 5.83 grams new. With a coin with no wear, you can calculate what the scrap value. For all Canadian .800 silver coins, there is .6 oz of Ag for every $1 face, so 4 of the 1965 or 66 quarters would be .6 oz times the cur...

Re: Canada 1920 1 cent

The photo is way too small to get any indication as to the grade. Just take a look at the details in the crown to see if there is any wear. If there is any wear there, it's not MS.

Re: 1 Cent 1859

I am a real person as well and have been collecting Victoria large cents for 40 years.... I have nearly 5000 Vickies, of which over 600 are 1859's. I have looked at 10's of thousands of Vict large cents because I, also, am lucky enough to live in the T.O. area and attend shows and auctions with grea...

Re: 1 Cent 1859

Definately an 1859/8 .. or "wide 9 over 8 as it's sometimes called. It has been cleaned and has some pits that appear to be corrosion pits (but maybe just dings) on the obverse. I wouldn't spend the $20-$25 to have it certified... it's easy to see it's a 9/8.

Re: Identifying 1859 Large Cent Varieties.

Both of your coins are "narrow 9" 1859's, although the first one is what Zoell called a "bold 9". Bold 9's are ID'd by the tail or knob of the 5 & 9 almost touching the upper loop or vertical. You should try to pick up a 2011 Charlton guide, as the variety section in the back...

Re: Crazy 1881H Legend...

As I remember, these posts took place early on when you were trying to say that a SIGLE 1882 working die was a 4/2, 4/1, 2/1 or some other combination. When you were shown other examples of a later die state (die cracks showing up in addition to the dots in the E's and other chips), you continued ab...

Re: Crazy 1881H Legend...

MKB .. Your first mention of resinking of dies occurred, based upon a single VG (at best) coin. At that time I sent you one of my coins that was a better example so that you could see all the attributes. You were saying that it was an Obv 4/1 or 4/2 .. I forget which and told you that it couldn't be...

Re: Crazy 1881H Legend...

MKB .. I think that you should spend some time rummaging through the libraries and archives of the Royal Mint in London the way the Bosox did for 2 weeks over there before you form opinions and then try to cram it down people's throats. You learn much more from ardent study and dedicated collecting ...

Re: HELP ON GRADING THESE COINS

That is a common silver dollar that is OK to have, but not worth it to have it cert'd. It is hard to tell from the picture the actual grade (Xf or so), but it has been whizzed or pilished or mechanically cleaned in some manner. A rule of thumb for having a coin 3rd party graded ... unless Trends or ...

Re: 1884 Obverse 1 Cent

That's a nice Obv 1, but there are other markers to tell as well. On an Obv 1, the tip of the crown will not impinge on the bead at all .. the bead will be perfectly round. Compare it to any '84 Obv 2. Also, the neck truncation tip/point will end directly above the bead that is centered over the C i...

Re: 1898 High H One Cent

The H mintmarks on the 1898's are all over the place, since they were handpunched into the working dies.... some well off the leaf lobe, some centered, some just barely touching, etc. The placement of the H has no correlation as to the scarcity. Some of the 98's have slightly repunched 9's or 8's an...

Re: Crazy 1881H Legend...

Dick ... This is not a "new" discovery or variety. It has been tracked and collected since before the 1960's when Hans Zoell published his pamphlets. This is a thread more than a year old and it was resolved back then. It's not unique; it's not new; and it's not a "discovery".......

Re: Crazy 1881H Legend...

In the making of any working dies, it takes multiple pressings from the hub, each followed by annealing and hardening, making it a multiday/week process, with any one of the following pressings maybe causing hub doubling or chattering/misalignment. I have over 200 1881 & 1882 Obv 1 or 1a large c...
