Re: 1931 Dime AU details - Damage

Hi! I'm still learning but I've been gathering advice about just this sort of thing from many people. I've talked at some length with a guy named Hugh Powell, who I met at Torex, and he is full of sage advice. His advice to me was to focus on "problem free" coins; e.g. coins that are not damaged. He...

collectors who sell coins.

Hello Coin People, I have a collection of around 200 coins at the moment and I'm contemplating selling around 140 of them; the idea being to use the proceeds to upgrade and expand on the 60 that are really in the areas I'm interested in. It's more about focusing the collection but of course the $$ w...

ICCS POP REPORTS??

Hello Coinland,
It's my understanding that ICCS does not issue POP reports any more but that there are old reports that can be acquired if you know who to ask. Anyone out there know anything about this? I would be most grateful for this sort of information.

Borsellino book on Newfoundland coins.

I managed to get a copy of this book on Newfoundland varieties and, wow, what a tour de force. As far as I can tell it never made it in to print. Amazing the things that are sitting around in people's hard drives.

Re: Guide book for Newfoundland coins?

Yes for sure - I have Charlton vol 1 (2019) - it was the first thing I bought when I started collecting again; the second was Andre Langlois's glorious book on grading Canandian coins which also has a fairly good representation of the Newfoundland issues. [I say "fairly good" but ye gods - that book...

Guide book for Newfoundland coins?

Happy New Year! I'm looking for a decent book on the coins of Newfoundland - NB, NS and PEI are of interest too but Newfoundland seems to have taken over my collecting interests. There is at least one book on the gold coins of NF but I'm more focused on 5 cent and 10 cent at the moment. Any suggesti...

coins of the British empire/commonwealth

One of the things I find most interesting about the coins of Canada is how, historically at least, they have reflected and reinforced the connections between this country and those of the British empire. Imagine a 20 year old who had lived his or her entire life in Ceylon standing on a street in Col...

Re: Is grading rational?

Actually, the grading of paper money doesn't appear to use to numerical scale....

Re: Is grading rational?

Interesting - did not know that the numerical scale is named Sheldon! And the final point - buy the coin not the holder - really is key. I feel like this is a major pitfall for amateur collectors.

Is grading rational?

We all know it's subjective but is it rational? I ask after taking a deep dive into the PCGS POP reports. If you graph the number of coins at each grade relative to the numerical scores you see some really odd trends. The most obvious one is that, between AU55/58 and MS-60, there is an enormous drop...

Re: specific cleaning of the devices?

Well, for the record, I disagree. There is a limited stock of vintage coins out there. In a sense they're like the stock of art works from the past and they ought to be treated as such. The wear on a coin reflects the hands that have held it and the things it has bought - such a boring little everyd...

specific cleaning of the devices?

I grow ever more paranoid about what has been cleaned or not. I've seen several coins that looks as though, while they had not been immersed in some reducing agent, they had maybe been spot cleaned so as to make the devices stand out. that is, the recessed parts of the coin are toned but the cameo o...
