Tons of issues with 2021 nickel

I accidentally picked up a full mint box of 2021 nickels. This gave me a great opportunity to find anomalies with them. I found about 10% of the coins have exactly the same problem on them. The others are surprisingly pristine. On the obverse: 1- The front of the Queen's nose has extra material on i...

The coins looks like those I find metal detecting on the beach. It has hairline scratch, exposed to moisture and the steel interior has started to rust.

It looks like a well worn 1947. The picture is way out of focus to give a rough idea of the grade.

Re: Victorian Large Cent Mintages

I would imagine the first two (1858 and 1859) were hoarded and that later years are now much scarcer than originally thought. I usually judge relative scarcity by the population reports. Actual numbers aside, proportionally, they're a pretty good indicator of what's out there.

Re: 1979 penny clad coming off

That coin looks like it was lacquered which was quite common to do back in the day. It’s now wearing off. You can dip it in pure acetone to loosen the grime. Then again, it’s so damaged it will never be worth anything more than face value. The mintage numbers for that date were quite high.

Re: 2012 $2 HMS Shannon with extra sail

I agree with you Bill. My mint rolls of 2021 dimes are chock full of quality control issues and quite embarrassing for the mint. I have complete rolls with the icing and what appears to be whizzing all over the coloured versions. If folks want to collect junk, they can spend a fortune.

Re: 2021 Bluenose Box, collecting thoughts

These coins will be like the 1949 dollar. Many available in high grades. Look through them and keep a couple of rolls and dispose of the rest. There are some varieties coming to light. The icebergs (looks like ice one the ship and sails), there’s the progression of date with various chips then the m...

Re: 2021 What is causing this feature?

The "ice" effect on the dimes is the result of low quality control. I purchased the Bluenose 10 cent mint rolls directly from the RCM and almost every 2021 dime suffered either that or a complete breakdown of the date. The coloured versions reverse are almost all suffering from what appears to be ab...

Nice. I have seen die deterioration on the water as well. It looks like ice.

I have a 1990 nickel that has this across all four digits. While unusual, it's pretty common.

To put it in perspective, I just picked up a certified EF40 for $125. I’ve seen VF30s for about $90.

I have posted numerous coins and bill photos on the site including some interesting die deterioration. I'm fine if you want to use them.

2021 old design Double Date die deterioration

Going through a roll of double date 2021 (old style) dimes, I uncovered what appears to be die deterioration looking like frosting in the relief. I’m calling it the snow (on the sails) and icebergs (on the water). A whole roll is affected with these variants.
