Re: Coin show pick up

Do you want the value of the token or the opinion of the $60 for the lot?

Re: 1874 H Crosslet-4 5 Cents: Double stamped, inverted.

A TPG certification does not add value.... the coin is worth the same, holstered or unholstered. What TPG plastic does do, however, is greatly increase the number of your potential buyer pool. A TPG normally will allow people to bid on something sight unseen with a little more confidence. But, with ...

Re: 1874 H Crosslet-4 5 Cents: Double stamped, inverted.

There are many type errors that are one of a kind...... it's varieties that there have to be any 'number-of' to get certified. Jeff didn't know what year/date the other coin similar to it actually was.... he was explaining that it probably IS a one-of-a-kind. If you were in Canada, I'd say send it t...

Also check out CCCS, who has a website and ID tracking ... ICCS does not.

Re: 1874 H Crosslet-4 5 Cents: Double stamped, inverted.

Mace .... This is what I got from the 5 cent guru. The other person who is the expert on 5 cent silvers is Brian Cornwell, who owns ICCS ... the 5 cent silvers were his babies and he had an outstanding collection (probably still does). Anyway, here is what I got from a long-time collector of the fis...

I have a little info for you Mace, but I need permission to quote it on here. I'll try to post it tomorrow. There's a group of us that are on a private site, but nothing from there can be put anywhere else without an OK.

Re: 1858 5/5?

The coin is 150 years old and has seen considerable circulation. Coins like that have the 'Vicky crud' in every nook and cranny and yours doesn't. It's been cleaned, probably boiled to some extent to release the dirt and grime. You would have dirt inside evry one of the letters and digits, plus evry...

Re: 1858 5/5?

I've been collecting Victoria varieties for well over 25 years and do lots of study/research. I help others write/vett books and have no desire to do it myself. I'm just an H&H .. help and hoard. I'd guess that I have close to 10,000 Vickies, so there's not much I've never seen, nor studied. You...

Re: 1858 5/5?

Nearly all of the 1858's have a repunched 5 of some sort, so there is really nothing novel about the 5 being redone. From Rob Turner's book, you have Reverse RC3, which was used on approx 2.67% of all the 1858's. Don't believe the 600K minted .. there were more like 1.5 or 1.6 million minted. At tha...

Re: 1859 Large Cent

Yes, it appears to be a 9/8, but I can't give you any Turner number (the ID for the die pair) because the photos are not clear enough and the coin has the Vicky crud. You are never going to be able to get a 'book' price for any coin, American or Canadian. Guides are guides ... just that. You can't s...

Re: 1859 Large Cent

I'd say F-12, maybe F-15 on a good day. The highest points of relief (and where you will see wear first) are in Vicky's hair bun, the hair tufts just in front of the ear, her eyebrow, and the laurel leaves. You just need to teach (after looking at a number of 59's) yourself to loook for those spots ...

Re: 1884 Large Cent Variety Question: Obverse #1 or #2

That's a #2 as well. If you have an 1876, compare the portrait (and where the crown tip meets the bead) with any 1881, 82, or 84 to see if you have a type of OBV 1 (but the 1, 1a's, 1/1a's and 2/1's will have a different neck truncation in relation to the bead over the C in Canada). The smooth, roun...
