half lives of coins

I recently posted the following question to another site: Does anyone know if there's ever been an attempt to estimate/calculate the rate at which coins in regular circulation are lost over time? For many coins we know the starting mintage and we may know about specific times when large numbers of c...

Re: Where are the posts?

I'm *very* fortunate in that my job is stable and, as I'm not blowing nearly as much money on other things, I've been scouring ebay and other sites for new acquisitions. Have recently purchased an 1873 Newfound 5 cent in F-12. This completes that year of 5 cents for me - which was a tough one as the...

Re: 1953 to 1964 Quarters

They're quite nice - decent frosty cameo on that second one. I don't collect that particular era but I'm sure there's someone out there who would be interested.

1858 20c mule.

There is mule version of the 1858 Province of Canada 20c that has the obverse of the intended coin (>700,000 minted) and the reverse of the 1862/4 New Brunswick 20 cent. It's a very interesting little freak of a coin. I've seen a few of them appear on eBay (Proof Positive has one there now for $15,0...

Re: Are some things boring?

@BillinBurl:
"By a "true variety" I mean a change in the dies dictated by the mintmaster (changes in Monarchs, legends, design, etc)."

This seems to be the gold standard - is there a way to identify such varieties??

Are some things boring?

I collect Newfoundland (1st) and Province of Canada (2nd) coins. As I've contemplated my priorities I've come to view scarcity and eye appeal as two defining points of interest. Eye appeal is relatively easy - a combination of grade and overall balance, surface, etc.... Scarcity is a little more com...

Re: 1898 Newfoundland 50c - NH1 or NH2?

You may be right - as I say, I find this to be a particularly difficult distinction. One person who could tell you in one second is Hugh Powell. He's the top expert in Newfoundland coins, certainly in Canada, possibly in the world. I have been dealing with him for a while as a client and have found ...

Given that you dug them out of the ground I think they're fairly awesome!

Re: 1898 Newfoundland 50c - NH1 or NH2?

I *think* it's an obverse #2 though I may be mistaken. I have one of both and, even though I've been staring at them for some time now, I still struggle to tell them apart. Key details include the eye (which is deeper set in obv #2) and the mouth (which is a little more frown-y in obv #2). I'm told ...

graded coin mischief......

Show of hands how many of you have seen/purchased coins in holders that looked as though they had been swapped in place of something better. And whether you think this happens frequently or not? Thinking specifically of coins that look cleaned where there's no indication of it in the grade. But open...

Re: collectors who sell coins.

Yes it is! I'm thinking that I might figure out what the most I can expect to bring in is and then decide whether it's worth it. It might make more sense just to donate all of it to the kid's table at Torex.....

Re: 1931 Dime AU details - Damage

I didn't mean that to sound disrespectful - though he is a guy and I met at a coin show (Torex specifically). I have since talked to him on several occasions and I have learned a great deal from him. He is incredibly generous and knowledgeable and he is the most honest dealer I have encountered - he...
