Cents were not taken out of circulation until 2012.
As there were over 820 million 2008 minted, the only
ones that might have some value would be an error coin
or a high grade MS66 or MS67.

True that higher grades will attract more collectors but in 2008 no-one saw the withdraw of the penny coming. Preservation levels are a big factor when it come to desirability. I say those rolls should be kept sealed for better return on investment down the line.

With all the pennies getting melted down by the Canadian government with the alloy recovery program does anyone think that might make some of the pennies worth more.

Honestly don't think this would in any way drive up prices. Unless I'm wrong even in this situation, at the end of the day we still need to go on mint quantity and demand before we can determine numismatic values.

Even if they were to disclose the quantity melted, we wouldn't know many were melted for each year.

Prices are set by supply and demand. There are infinitely more coins out there (and for the next 50-60 years) than there ever will be collectors wanting any. Higher grade cents will have some numismatic value, but there is no correlation to the alloy recovery program.

I have always liked collecting the cent (it is what I could afford lol). However, when they discontinued it...I saw that the market was being flooded with the " last cent coin rolls". Even though they made them out of different materials, I felt the big return for so many minted would take too I keep my older cents but am reluctant to buy the new ones...maybe I am wrong (I do not know that much about the topic. I think they are planning to do away with the 5 cent piece (i.e. now that one can pay for things with cards and in the future finger prints lol).
