Assist - 1946 50 cents - 'design' in '6'

Hi, I'm unclear on what the 'design' designation indicates in the 1946 50 cent piece. ngccoin.com calls it 'hoof in 6' which mine looks like it has, but I've also seen other references to a chip or die crack. I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks!
