Hello, I recently purchased a 1967 Canada Centennial Proof Set listed as "Rare Gold-Plated Version" from a reputable auction company. I would attach a photo, however it hasn't arrived yet.
I am not able to find any articles on this set ever been minted. I am prepared for the possibility of an error on the listing. I can't wait to see it !!

Can anyone shed any light please ?

Regfards

Dan

Will have to for pictures to verify but it has probably been plated aftermarket.
The RCM did not gold plate coins back in 1967.

some additional discussion on the third party sets:
https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/top ... _ID=383239

These coins in the cellophane are not the tribute to Alex Colville coins, as those are gold, gold and silver. The other pictures of these usually have a designation of uncirculated, but there isn't much on who made them. Generally, they are real RCM coins that have been gold plated by someone else, as the mint was not plating in 1967.

Wouldn’t normally chime in on this but I’ve bought a number of these sets in the past and attempted sell them on eBay, actually selling for the same as the RCM non-plated set. The plastic wrap is definitely different from what the RCM used, not sure who put these things together, but there are so many aftermarket varieties than too count. Another case of companies taking regular coins and, making them all fancy and randomly pricing them high for no reason.

Not sure how valid the sold price on that link is or how a market price could be established for something like this.

The original poster may have to response, but I think the set they’re referring to is the Centennial set in the black case that would normally have the solid $20 gold coin but they bought the one that has a gold plated one instead?

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your posts, all good comments and on the mark.
The photo you see is the set I bought recently at auction. I just received it yesterday.
The mark you see on the $1 coin is actually on the coin itself, a few much smaller marks on other coins are on the cellophane.
This was determined by just carefully nudging the coin around in the cellophane.
I will take it in and have the gold plating confirmed.
I could make on a word stamped into the cellophane as well which boosted my hope when I was bidding.
It just says " Uncirculated ". RCM set say " Royal " , " Canadian", "Mint ". I should have looked that up before the purchase.

I was hope full it was something as at least one other person was bidding against me. I did find a set ( not this one ) that showed a past sale of $345. I also can't find any one that offers to gold plate coin sets.

I bought it...spilled milk...you know what I mean !!

Thanks again for all your input.

Don't be hard on yourself - there was something about it that you loved, and maybe someone else did too!
and in many ways, that is a big part of what coin collecting should be

Anyone that has collected for a bit has got a find that didn't cost them much, and other things that they may have paid a bit more for because they wanted it. And it is good to think about the auction houses and sellers that are consigning, as potentially having bids in too. I wish they all would just have stated reserves, or a true 'no reserves'. Hate bidding on something to think I have it, then find out that the bids didn't go high enough. Usually because I likely would have bid on something else, but cut myself off.

If you find more on this set, it would be good to hear more about it.
Thanks for sharing!

These were one of many aftermarket "1967 sets" that were sold where entrepreneurs made a buck selling souvenir-related stuff. I bought one like this, complete with a cool paper envelope, for about $75 in 2020. I have seen these pop up at coin shops now and and again.

After all the discussion on toning, I wonder if this set was actually plated, or just toned (not necessarily naturally).
