but under the sold at auction price is 1.99 for a 1937 graded fine
why the discrepancy?

You asked "what you were missing" and the answer is eyeballs. There's ugly coins and nice coins of the same grade all the time.... it's up to the buyer what he wants. I doubt very much if either of those 2 coins was graded by a TPG, so the seller can put whatever grade he wants on a holder. I wouldn't believe either price for what you could expect from a coin, especially not prices listed from this site.

Also, some auctions have a starting point to cover their costs and/or increments that are beyond what the coin is worth. There are good and not so good auctions. Some will group a bundle - let's say 5 - of $.20 = $.50 coins and then start the auction at $5. You can always bid if you like them...

You'll have to ask the site or moderator why it's 50 cents. The '37 was the first year of issue for the new monarch and many were kept for that reason.. The'37 sells at a premium over those for the next 11 years (3X), so I think that the 50 cents in the index is too high to start with. The prices in any book or guide that you read are normally overpriced and are readily available elsewhere for less. You can't sell a coin to a book ... just a person. Yes, dividing the cost by the number, each cent is worth 7 cents US, or about a dime Canadian.
