going thru some pl sets from the mint i found a penny that has 2 areas of what looks like a dye slightly more red than the penny itself..sorry no pics....this penny has always remained in the plastic holder...any thoughts?

Without a picture, it is really hard to tell, we would be just guessing. It is possible that there was something spilled on the CENT.
