How to diagnose early PL strikes?

Post by stldanceartist » Fri Jan 26, 2018 6:32 pm

Good evening everyone!

So, I accidentally picked up a 1958 Prooflike Set at a local flea market a couple months ago. Didn't think much of it at the time (just paid melt for it.) Decided to finally take a look at it, and was curious why someone had it in a Capital holder with the Prooflike Set label (wasn't aware that the RCM had made PL sets back then.) So I've started trying to learn more about these sets (and individual coins.)

I'm curious if anyone here knows a good reference where I can go to learn how to diagnose these coins by year, as I would really like to not accidentally miss out on future coins should they come my way. I have a lovely 1951 5 Cent (Low Relief) coin in a 2x2 with a PL label that I'd love to be able to diagnose whether it's just a superb business strike or a PL strike.

Thank you, and have a wonderful weekend.
