1859 Canada large cent.
1859 Canada large cent.
I have ten 1859 Canada large cents. There are four coins with a thin 9 as in 59 and six coins with a fat or thick 9 as in 59. My question is are the thick 9"s re punched 9 or over date.? I can't see any doubling. Thanks for any help.

We need photos. Any 9's that look "wide" are normally 9/8's, but you can see easily that they are repunched, sometimes very crudely.

Re: 1859 Canada large cent.
If you could provide a complete picture of the Reverse it would help greatly to help you identify your 1859's, if the forum needs the Obverse to help they might ask for them as well. It helps to see all the key markers of a coin when identifying certain coins.
Thanks Jim

Re: 1859 Canada large cent.
My guess is:
1st coin is a Haxby 1859-PC59-179 50+J9 VG - 10 condition no DP9
2nd coin Haxby 1859-PC59-244 80a+P18 EF condition
3rd coin Haxby 1859-PC59-188 54b+J13b Vf condition
4th coin same as the 2nd coin
5th coin I'll work on it I need more time as its pretty worn out is there any die cracks on Reverse or Obverse?
You can check them out yourself on the 1859 Haxby site without the coins in hand this is my best guess to identifying your coins

Re: 1859 Canada large cent.
Those are all narrow 9's, no 9'8's. The 1859's were very thin and did not wear well. Since the digits are tapered from the top to the bottom to pop out of the dies, any wear will make the digits appear "fat" or wide. As struck, they are narrow at the top and wide at the bottom so that's what you are seeing. They are still narrow 9's.

Re: 1859 Canada large cent.
I agree Bill is correct in his answer no DP9's or 9/8 but you should still check out the Haxby site not only will it tell you what you have in the 1859 coins its fun to track the die down. the die cracks and dp letters really help anyway Happy Hunting
