1876 Canadian one cent with no "H"
Greetings and Happy Holidays
I am new to this board and I look forward to interesting info and discussions.
That said, I have a Canadian one cent from 1876 that has no "H" under the date. I have had many 4 local coin dealers all say that they are stumped as they all seem to agree that the coin shows no evidence of wear or removal of the H without it otherwise equally impacting the date above it. There is an article (pdf paper) by Rob Turner March 2011 however it does not help to verify or deny my coin.
Yes, I will be sending it away to be verified/certified and would love any recommendations.
Attached is a couple photos and I can make more if helpful.

The only 1876 cents without an H that I know are the Specimen cents.
Maybe Bill our resident expert on Vickies will see this and comment.

Well, to me, it looks like there WAS something there where the H should be.... a slightly lighter area. Please show me the Obverse, since the specimen 1876's were Obv 1a and the normal '76H coins were Obv 1. Additionally, the regular specimen coins has full serif Obv N's. That should prove it and will save you the TPG fees.

Re: 1876 Canadian one cent with no "H"
While I understand the correlation to N; I do not believe that was the definitive tell.
The likelyhood of the h being "rubbed off" by normal wear and nothing else is extremely low. However, I have only recently been in possession of this coin so it COULD have been deliberately rubbed off by someone. The fact that I paid $30 for one hundred odd world coins (to which this coin was one of) kind of tells me that nobody was trying to fool me. I tried rubbing off a number on the date of another junk coin and it was screamingly obvious every way I tried.
I guess you would just have to actually see the coin in person to see what i mean.
Mystery continues for me I think... No surprise right? its what i want to hear too... lol

Re: 1876 Canadian one cent with no "H"
I don't necessarily think that someone "rubbed" off the N. I think that more than likely, it was a plugged die, where the N had no chance to penetrate the planchet because the "cavity" was full of gunk of some sort. Keep it as an oddity. BTW, the single serif N's on the Obverse show that it was not a specimen Obverse; it's a normal 1876. And, since you didn't show the whole Obverse, I can't tell you whether it was an Obv 1 or 1a ... you didn't include the neck truncation with the beads.

The Obverse is a regular Obv 1, not a 1a which the specimen had. This picture looks even more like there was something there where the H should be. Someone may have done it eons ago.

thanks Bill.. great incites
I blasted it with a strong light. There is a square box yet it is on an odd angle like this
there is no bump or indentation however
for fun.. i am going to overlay another h coin to see exactly where it should be... more to come ...lol

Re: 1876 Canadian one cent with no "H"
so i did an overlay with a 23% opacity setting and it revealed the h to be exactly where the spot was and it clearly shows that an h (Or something) must have been there
.....waahhhh..... DOH!
