2006 Canadian penny ?

Post by William Fowler » Sun Jan 03, 2021 9:57 pm

I found a strange 2006 penny with no copper cladding on it. Has any one ever see one before?

Hi Will, this can happen if the penny was in a fire, it will expand a bit also or with sodium hydroxide and zinc powder solution. You can also take it to your local coin shop to see what they say.

That is what is called a Texas cent.
It is created by putting a copper plated cent between two pieces of leather and beating it with a mallet expanding the zinc core . The copper plating does not expand as much as the zinc and breaks and falls off leaving a larger zinc core. Because it is larger, it is called aa Texas cent.
