PMD or strike through? ... opinions please.

Post by CalicoJack » Sat Oct 08, 2022 9:30 pm

I have a 1978 1 cent that has a nicely worn indent along the rim.
The wear around the damage is pretty consistent with the overall wear of the coin.
My first thought is PMD, but the metal has not moved or bulged out as much as one would expect if it occurred outside the collar die during the strike, which would keep the coin fairly round...
So, I thought I would throw it up here for all you knowledge keepers to take a look at.
Cheers.

It is damage of some sort. There are only certain things that can happen during the striking of
a coin that can cause an error and that is not one of them.
Looking at the reverse you can see how the rim is slightly bulging out, this could not happen to
a coin that was struck in collar.

Thanks for the response, I figured it was PMD, but I seem to remember in earlier years the collar did have a slight ability to expand on springs, although very slight. So this was one to ponder a bit. Cheers!
