Boy, since Brian Cornwell passed away, the folks at ICCS are getting typewriter happy and trying harder to make a buck. EVERY 1881 has a pointed tip! They are putting way more extraneous stuff on the holders that means nothing. This refers to the neck truncation (a sharp pointed tip). ALL 1881 Obv 1's have a pointed tip that almost hits the bead and the truncation is a smooth slant. In 1881, the mint also made a new Obverse master and made Obv 1a dies as well. These Obv 1a dies had a somewhat shortened rounded tip. The straight OBV 1 dies are the same dies used for the 1876 dies and many 1881's are just Obv 1's. Since it took 2-4 presses, sometimes days apart so that the dies could be hardened and the planchets softened or annealed, some coins were struck with both die types, so you have 1a/1 coins. Unless you look close at the neck truncation tip, it's hard to tell them apart, but above the end there will be a very tiny "hump". They are quite common (the 1a/1) and just a little more common than a straight Obv 1 coin, so that there is no premium for either type ... they are just 1881 common coins. ICCS has no business putting that crapola on the holders. It means nothing other than they can charge more for the certification because they allude that it is some kind of variety. They are just telling you that the coin is just an Obverse 1 and why they couldn't say that plainly is beyond me. If you look at the 65th edition(2011) that had the Vicky varieties in the back, you will see the difference between Ob1's, Obv 1a's, and 1a/1's ... neither normal Charlton or Haxby show what a 1a/1 tip looks like.
