Strange Canadian Penny

Post by Glimix » Wed Aug 23, 2023 12:02 pm

I have recently found this 2000 penny. It appears to be a full zinc core without any copper. Knowing that someone can chemically remove the copper, I took some measurements of the coin.

Normal zinc core 2000 penny per Royal Mint:
Diameter: 19.05mm
Thickness: 1.45mm
Weight: 2.25g

Copperless coin
Diameter: 19.25mm (+.2mm)
Thickness: 1.5mm (+0.05mm)
Weight: 2.25g

Any suggestions on what I have?

Welcome to the Forum

It is called a “Texas Cent”, the coin has been put between two pieces of leather and pounded.
This will remove the copper and expand the zinc core. See these quite often on US cents but
not as often on Canadian cents. There is no value except as a novelty.

Thanks that would explain the diameter increase, what about the thickness increase?
