Penny colours
Is Trace Red lower than Red/Brown or higher?
I know the best is Red , then Red/Brown and last is Brown. Where does a coin with Trace Red fall. Thanks

Re: Penny colours
Trace Red is a term used by CCCS and refers to 10-40% remaining lustre and red colour.
This would be lower than Red Brown.
This would be lower than Red Brown.
Re: Penny colours
Thanks. That’s what I thought.
Re: Penny colours
My next question coinguy is:
I sold a 1891 sdsl ms-62 red/brown for less
then I paid a sdsl ms-62 trace red. I paid $200 more but
The trace red is a double T
Did I do good or did I make a mistake.
Answer here ____________

Re: Penny colours
What is sdsl, are they a grader? I have never heard of them.
When you say a double T, I take it you are referring to the repunched T in GRATIA.
In a case like this, a slight difference in colouring would not make a difference in value.
Most people would regard Trace Red the same as Red Brown and most graders would not
even recognize it as being any different. As far as value difference between a regular T and
a repunched T goes, perhaps one of our Vickie experts can help.
Large cents are not my area of expertise.

Re: Penny colours
1891 large cent had many varieties. Not like the 1859 large cent.
Small date small leaves (sdsl) ob2 and ob3
Large date large leaves (ldll) ob2 and ob3
Large date small leaves (ldsl) ob2 and ob3
You kinda answered my question that the Repunched t will add valve for some. I guess if I sell it I’ll really know my answer. Lol
Thank you

The Obv 2 is worth about 1/3 more than an Obv 3. You should get Turner's book "Dies and Diadems" to see all the varieties of the '91's and '92's. To differentiate an Obv2 to a 3, look at the E's and if the cross-bar is short or long ... a 3 is long. The repunched T in Gratia is an Obv 3 and ALL SD/SL '91's had the RP'd T, so it is the most common. What I posted is incorrect and I reposted the correct data below). It is the 2nd most common SD/SL Obv 3, not the most common. If your R/P'd T is in Victoria, you have a rarity. If the R'P'd T is in Gratia, the T has extra long serifs as well as being R/P'd and they used the same hand "T" punch that they used on the PEI cent.
There are quite a few scarce varieties, but you haven't mentiuoned any of the markers for them.

Re: Penny colours
Hello Bill it's a re-punched in Gratia. Long serifs.
I need to disagree that all 1891 had re-punched T. The 2 I had in the past didn't.
Also this website and the Charlton Standard price the Re-punched T higher than the regular t ob 3.
I was asking if the colour change of the coin will make a difference.

Re: Penny colours
Again I am talking about the 1891 Large Cent SD/SL ob 3
If you search the coins on eBay you will see that the majority of the SD/SL coins have normal T's in Gratia

Re: Penny colours
I only went by Rob Turner's book "Dies and Diadems" and I copied down the wrong info. 23.08% of all '91 SD/SL Obv 3's had the long serif, repunched T. You are not going to get a solid answer of the "trace" or "red/brown" as each TPG has different opinions, as well as opinions of the individual graders. There were 5 other '91 Obv 3 dies that had much lower percentages than yours and 1 with a higher percentage. Yours is far from the scarcest and I have no midea why the R/P'd T is selling (or asking) for more $$. It is nearly the most common, but many collectors just like R/P'd letters or digits.
