1886 Repunched 6 on Obverse 2 (?)

Post by archerg » Sun Dec 10, 2023 12:17 pm

Might be a dumb question on my part, I'm short on practice IDing obverses on these anyways.

From sorting a recent group: This clearly matched the listed variety, I can say with some confidence.

The catalogue listing identifies the variety as paired with Obverse 1. But, unless I'm mistaken, this sure looks like the double chin of Obverse 2. Maybe the variety pairs with multiple obverses? Any and all comments welcome.

Catalogue (information on this site) is wrong, look at the picture here;https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-pr ... diancoin-2

It's clearly OBV2

Thanks for the reply, the overlay of the 6/6 obscures but a second image confirms what I see as Obverse 2. I see a few sold/selling on ebay that are Obverse 1. I guess every catalogue is in need of revision, just as the last word is never written on a subject, just as we are always learning.

I have found one of these C2 6/6 coin. I think it’s a lot harder to find than the C1

Yes, I think that it may be my coin (but maybe not)that we put in the 2011(65th ed) of Charlton in the back with the Vicky varieties. Yes, this site is wrong; it's an Obv 2. In the Charlton we had the 6/6 as 60 in VG, 90 in F, 135 in VF and 200 in XF. Nice find. There's a 2nd type of 6/6 showing lower left with now as much offset, but stronger, and a little easier to find. When we wrote the Charlton varieties, we had alomst 120 that we wanted included, but Charlton only gave us 80 pages, so many neat varieties left out.
