Weird 1998 Penny, head side blank tin colour

Hey,

I have a 1998 penny that is not struck on the Head side, nor does it have the copper colour. I got in as change a nice few years ago and from what I can tell it should not exist. Doesn't look like it has been altered in any way.

Has anyone seen one like this?

It is damage, the Obverse has been ground off.
You cannot have a coin with the rim on one side only

Doesn't look like damage, no tool marks etc just looks like they forgot to do the head side entirely, I will take some clearer pics later today or tomorrow, edges are smooth and copper in colour

How can you have a coin only struck on one side, it would be like clapping with one hand.

Believe what you want. I can only say what I know.
There are no tool marks that I can see, so I don't know how you would grind it so smooth and I don't know for what reason. as to how it could happen, that would be an error in the manufacturing process some where along the line is my best guess.

based on your responses I would guess that no you have no seen something like this before. Thanks for your thoughts

You don’t have to prove how it can be damaged, you have to prove what during the striking of the coin could cause it to be an error. There are only a limited number of things that can cause an error but countless things that can cause damage. What of the limited things do you think would cause this to be an error. Apparently your knowledge of the minting process is limited so I suggest you educate yourself on what an actual error is and learn the minting process then you would realize that there is no possible way that this can be an error.

Smooth side has no rim and normal side has a rim, that is your answer

One added note there are a few Canadian coins uniface they are really rare but they all have a rim on both sides as when a planchet is created it is rimmed then they are struck as a final coin
