This item was purchased 45 years ago at a Smith College estate auction in Northhampton, Massachusetts. It was in a small black snap action purse among a group of Canada cents and other coins and exonumia, one of which was a Lauzon ferry token. It appears to exhibit slight doubling on outside bottom left. All thoughts about the item most welcome. See images below.

Not reallly doubling .. I think die deterioration where a small chip came off the submatrix and showed on the die.

Thank you Bill for responding. I agree with your analysis, so it's time to put this one to bed. Thanks again...much appreciated!
Re: 1 cent 1898/8 H
We won't put this to bed quite yet. One more story to tell. Yours looks to be an early die state of the die pair shown in the attached, so the die breaks may not be visible yet or extremely faint. Let me know if you see any of them.
Re: 1 cent 1898/8 H
The markers that do match are the doubling of the 8 and the mint mark. The other markers on the subject coin are absent and therefore do not match the O98-5_R98-5 die pairing perhaps because the subject coin is as you say in an early die state. Thanks for responding...much appreciated.
