2012 Nickel - Foreign Metal Embedded during strike?
2012 Nickel - Foreign Metal Embedded during strike?
Lots going on with this one. There is a small chip of foreign metal that could be iron or copper fused into the coin in front the log, some of the contaminant appears to have been throw sideways during the strike and hit the inner rim. On the tip of the log there is a small die chip or accumulation, and there are accumulations in the KG as well.

Corrosion.

I know its corrosion but the amount of die damage in the immediate area makes wonder how it got there, it doesn't match the standard die pattern so I don't think it is a PMD plating failure. The foreign metal (maybe an iron or copper defect that disrupted the copper layer judging by the green corrosion) has literally fused into the underlying steel. I just took another look at the coin with a better loupe and there is a die crack in the beavers tail and accumulations on the "5" and first "A" as well, signs of imminent die failure all over this one...

Cleaned up the corrosion with some CLR and scrubbing with the end of a toothpick
2 small die chips on the top and outside edge of the 5 Polished corrosion, accumulations around K, die chip on log and slanted beads Accumulations around Date and CANADA, Die crack on top half of tail
